40k vs Fantasy?
I was just wondering, which one is generally easier to get into and possibly cheaper to get a decent army up?
Either way, i plan on using orks cause they are down with the WAAAAAGHH!
I like the sci fi approach, but sometimes it'd be fun to punt a dirty stunty!
Thanks guys!

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
Easiest game to get into is 40k, fantasy is cheaper.
Fantasy is cheaper because you can buy a battleforce (battalion box) and add 3 characters and actually have a functional army!
Dont let justin deter you, in fantasy, orks are actually incredibly fun, and even use spells that are relevant to the game.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
Also which game is more popular at your FLGS or with your gaming crowd?
This can lead to more bang or clang for your bucks. Pier pressure is not cool but if your only two that have fantasy armies it will get boring quick.
IMHO Fantasy has a better rules set.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
also from what i have seen, i like the Fantasy Ork models a little bit better actually.
So i am thinking of maybe starting with Fantasy, then moving up if i feel so behooved.
I guess the first thing i should get is a codex... but what are the armies made up with usually? I saw someone say you could just get a battalion and then add a few characters in and your set..
Well, i saw the battalions, but i am not exactly sure what you mean by characters? like specific heroes? I saw some of them and they looked pretty epic!

Lords & Heroes are considered characters. You are limited in how many you can take. i.e. for a 2000 point game you can only have 0-1 Lord & 0-4 Heroes (1 lord 3 heroes or 0 lord 4 heroes). There is no minimum, to my knowledge.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
Fantasy Is more Hero oriented. You can outfit them with weapons Stabby bitz and what not. also formations and movment actually matter.
40k is more about troops. and whats not alot more capturing objectives etc.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
one get one lord for every 3 heroes usually, its dependant upon the codex, but generally speaking lord choices absolute dominate whatever facet they choose, whether it be manouvering, combat, or magic.
Hero choices are the dumbed down versions of lords, but are still incredible compared to say, the normal rank and file unit.
Then there are simply unit champions who would be something like a squad seargant.
To put it in other terms:
Gandolf would be a Lord choice for magic
Gimley would be a Hero choice for fighting
Frodo would be a unit champion for hobbits

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
If you want to start in Fantasy and like Orcs then your best intro deal is to get the intro box "Battle for Skull Pass" It gives you lots of goblins (part of the Orcs and Goblins Army) sell of the Dwarves (if you so desire) and add your Orcs - especially the nasty Black Orcs-a War boss and get the Orc and Goblins codex. The basic set also gives you the rule book, dice, templates, and basic scenarios to begin learning the game at home (although plenty of folks would be willing to teach you to play at the store as well). I have an Orc and Gobbo Army, and they be a hoot to play.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
So I got to thinking....
I have a box of ork boyz... 4 of them painted so far.
My friend sent me a custom built Deff Copta that looks really sweet. And that Warboss i painted (i am really proud of it for some reason) along with i think they are called nobz. (5 of those)
So is it worth it to just slowly build a 40k army, or jump into fantasy which would in the long run (if i understand correctly) easier and cheaper to get a playable army together.
Basically... I dont know the usual point values people play, and what is worth the points. So I have no clue as to what i should be looking at getting to build a playable army for either forms of warhammer.
From what i understand, i need less figures for Fantasy. But as i stated above, i already have about 15 or so figures and a vehicle for the 40k version.
tl:dr=I have 15 40k orks and no fantasy orks. Should i stick with 40k or jump to fantasy because it'd be cheaper and easier to get an army.
Thanks
sorry for the ramblings
Also, after megacon, i plan to start coming to the store more to either watch people play, paint, or just hang out and talk about warhammer since this looks to be a really fun hobby, and i'd like to make some friends with the same interest in Warhammer.

Re: 40k vs Fantasy?
All depends. If you enjoy 40k more Swing towards the 40k way. If you like fantasy Build you a fantasy army heh.
I got tons o orks So if your ever at the store i could play a game of 40k with ya, you using some o mah orks see if you like it or not.
Also could show you all the nifty things in fantasy as well heh. i'm usually in the store on the weekends so if you see me there i'd be happy to explain it and or show for me showings always easier meh
But the main point is before you jump head over heels in it decide what you like more after actually testing it out to make sure your most happy with ur choice.
