Randy or billy or mitch or roy, painting question
How did they achieve this effect? I decided I wanna strip my tau down, and I realllllly like how this looks.

I can see why your interested. This is a good look. Now, if what you are interested in is the blue/green metallic highlight, this effect can be done either using pearlescent paint (reaper has some and -- correct me if I have misremembered -- but I believe these are what Roy has used to good effect on his Mardi Gras Cryx) or create a very light mix of mithril silver and maybe a royal or ultramarine blue laid down as a very light wash over the base color with light fading of the base color at the edges. It may even be that this model has two layers of such a wash (one green with mithril and another blue with mithril) As for the metal damage, this is usually done with choas black as a base that will become the outline of the damage with boltgun metal painted inside. However, those may not even be silver. Now that I look at it, I think the battle damage is actaully a grey base (like the exposure of grey primer) with skull white highlights. I am always willing to experiment with painting techniques, if you want me to try to figure it out.

That would be excellent if you could figure it out and let me know how to do it. Im about to strip about 90% of my tau and am going to redo them in a uniform paint scheme.

Okay - I'll give it a shot on some plasticard and keep track of various tries.

I think I have a formula. The base coat could be either DA green or Catachan Green (put on in an even opaque coat) the first leads to a final coat that is a bit brighter and a little more glossy, and the second darker and more flat. A slightly lightened mix of the main color faded on the edges. I used bubonic brown for the yellow band (and bubonic brown with ogre flesh mix in for the engine vents). The bubonic browns could be washed with a light wash (I used my own mix of nutmeg brown/water/floor polish and it worked nicely for deepening the tone at the edges (I suppose that watered down gryphonne sepia or ogre flesh washes could be used as well). On the green, the blue/green metallic I mix roughly 20% mithril silver, 40% Thraka green wash, 40% Asureman Blue Wash, and a few drops of water. I washed it in an even coat over the green, and it gave a blue/green metallic sheen to the green. If you want something more pearlescent in that it will change tones and color in the light, then you might want to check the reaper paints I mentioned earlier (and talk to Roy as he's used this with great success). Wow, that was quick. I appreciate that muchly sir!
I will most certainly be trying this after I get all my models stripped.
